東京・六本木の21_21 DESIGN SIGHTで企画展「クリストとジャンヌ=クロード “包まれた凱旋門”」が開催されています（2023年2月12日まで）。ブルガリア出身のクリストとモロッコ生まれのフランス人、ジャンヌ＝クロードはかつてパリで出会い、夫婦となって２人でアーティストとしての活動を始め、亡くなるまで、あまりにもインパクトのある作品を多数、遺しました。

パリのエトワール凱旋門を銀色の布で包むプロジェクトが実現したのは、2021年秋。残念ながら２人が亡くなってからでした。コロナ禍が収まらない中ではありましたが、実に600万人もの人々が見に訪れたと言います。21_21 DESIGN SIGHTの企画展では、凱旋門を包んだ布やロープの実物、スケール感のある映像などによって、少しでも本物の迫力に近づけようという工夫がなされており、パリまで見に行けなかった筆者も、その空気を味わうことができました。
クリストとジャンヌ=クロードは、「包む」ことを表現手法の一つとして、半世紀以上の間にたくさんの作品の制作やプロジェクトの実現に携わりました。夫妻がパリの凱旋門を包むことを構想したのは1961年だそうです。「包む」作品について特に思い出されるのが、2010年にやはり21_21 DESIGN SIGHTで開催された「クリストとジャンヌ=クロード展 LIFE=WORKS=PROJECTS」に、布で包まれた１冊の本が作品として展示されていたことです。その本の作品は、クリストとジャンヌ=クロード夫妻が、懇意にしていたデザイナーの三宅一生さんに贈ったものだったと記憶しています。その時も、包まれた本を実に感慨深く眺めました。
